With your TEFL certificate in hand you are now ready to start your new adventure. However there are many factors you may need to consider before making the move.
Time
Are you looking to teach overseas for three months? 1 year? Longterm?
These variables will determine what visas you will apply for and what other arrangements will need to be made.
3 Months
This may seem like a very specific timeframe but most US, UK and Australian passports will allow you to visit a country for up to 90 days visa free! This is not the case for all countries, so you will need to check the visa requirements for the specific country you are considering. However this means that you have one less hoop to jump through to start your TEFL adventure.
This timeframe may also allow you to have a taste of this new life. You may be able to keep your home and belongings in your home country, maybe even sublease your place for the three months. This will allow you to taste the TEFL teaching world with minimal risk.
If you are Australian, you may be entitled to long service leave or annual leave at half pay or even leave with no pay that could allow you to try your adventure with employment to return to. There may be similar opportunities for US and UK citizens.
1 Year
Think how fast 2020 has gone already, we are in July! One year is not a lot of time, but it could be a year of adventure.
There are also 12 month visa schemes that may allow you to live and work in countries easily for 12 months. If you are under 35 years old, there are also working-holiday visas that you may be eligible to apply for. The conditions for these visas change dependant on the country you are visiting and your home country. Some of these visas even allow up to 24 months of stay.
Also most Asian countries have fairly relaxed visa programs. For some countries you are able to enter on a 30 day tourist visa, apply for another extension of 30 days then leave the country and re-enter to start the process again. This means every two months, you will get the opportunity to explore a nearby country then are able to continue your stay with a new entry visa. Just be sure that you do your research so you know exactly what is required for each country.
There are also working visas that you can always apply for, however this generally means that you would need to find employment before you enter the country. While this is possible and there are many companies that can arrange this for you, it may be best to get your ‘feet on the ground’, talk with other expats and then be able to find employment with a company you trust.
Longterm
Maybe you have tried 3 months or 1 year and you are ready to make the move permanently. If this is the case there are many more factors to consider.
With regards to longterm visas, if you have work, great then you may be able to apply for a work visa. Also check the requirements for each country, but you may be eligible for residency after 5 years, thus allowing your stay to become even more permanent.
Also check your heritage, maybe you have a grandfather or grandmother who was born in Europe, thus allowing you citizenship and the right to live in any EU country. Do you have family in South America, are you entitled to citizenship? Remember each country has their own regulations, so be sure to check what you are eligible for. There may be a lot of paperwork involved, but this will allow you the stability to make your new adventure permanent.
