TEACHME TEFL

For most teachers, the classroom has become your lounge room and the whiteboard has turned into your computer screen.

This presents new challenges for teachers as we learn how to teach effectively online.

Some teachers, especially TEFL teachers, may be more familiar with online teaching methods. However there are classroom activities we always use, so let’s see how to take these activities online.

Taking classroom activities ONLINE

Scavenger Hunt

For TEFL teachers this is essential as you want to make sure your students are building their vocabulary.

A fun way to do this online is to present a topic (colours, animals, kitchen items etc) that you have recently studied and ask students to find in their house an item that fits this topic.

This will not only help students to concrete these vocabulary words, but will also help you to see the students understanding of each topic.

Two truths and a Lie

For older and intermediate students, you may be familiar with the game: Two truths and a lie.

To start this game the teacher would write 2 truths and 1 lie on the board and the class has to guess which is the lie, then students in pairs repeat the activity.

This is great as it helps to increase student talk time and also allows students to put into practise using the correct verb tense and vocabulary that has already been taught.

If you are teaching through the Zoom platform, you can use the Breakout Room function to seperate the class into teams. In teams, students come up with 2 truths and 1 lie and appoint a team leader to present these to the class.

Matching Game

This is great for younger students, often you will create cards for students to practice something that has been taught. Buy turning over the card the student sees a word or an image and needs to find the matching card. For example, you may be teaching, on, over, under, in etc and you have the words on some cards and an image on others, students then need to find a match, those who find a match are able to keep that set of cards and the student with the most sets wins.

There are online Memory game creators you can use such as Educaplay

Here you can create a free account and you can play this through sharing your screen one if your students have another device they can play using a code.

There are so many resources that are already created to help teachers to make their classes interactive.

We hope these suggestions will help your next online class.
